Betül Aksuground studies
2024
Fired & unifired clay, different dimensions
Produced as part of the SAHA Studio program with the support of SAHA

ground studies is part of Betül Aksu’s ongoing work Permessus, a fictional ancient city marked by undefined borders and an unknowable past. Developed during her residency at SAHA Studio, this body of work turns its focus to the present of Permessus, focusing on the idea of “ground” as both a material condition and a conceptual site. Using red clay from Menemen, Betül creates fragile yet resilient surfaces that suggest a terrain in flux. The forms question their own edges, their proximity to others, and the boundaries they construct or resist.

These works consider how differences can exist together through supportive infrastructures. Spread throughout the studio space, ground studies invites viewers into a site of collective uncertainty. Through this spatial and conceptual inquiry, Betül proposes a foundation that is not fixed or imposed, but continuously shaped through proximity, tension, and care.
