Betül Aksuimagination permission
2024
Installation
Concrete blocks, clay, 60x25x15 cm each
As part of the Permessus series
imagination permission challenges the official permits and bureaucratic systems that regulate movement in today’s world. The installation features tilted concrete blocks placed across the floor, evoking the horizontal columns of ancient cities that remain partially buried. By positioning these typically upright architectural elements horizontally, Betül disrupts their original function, symbolizing structures that no longer serve their intended purpose. This reimagining of familiar forms critiques the rigidity of border systems, such as residence permits, that often treat boundaries as unchangeable, despite their arbitrary nature. The piece suggests that bureaucratic structures are not fixed, but rather, open to transformation.
As part of the Permessus series, imagination permission contributes to Betül’s broader investigation of how borders are imposed, questioned, and redefined.
