Betül Aksuintroduction-body-conclusion2022 Video installation in three partsintroduction-body-conclusion is an exploration of storytelling that challenges traditional narrative structures. Through a video installation in three interconnected parts, Betül invites the viewer to reflect on the passage of time, the process of creation, and the subtle intricacies of personal experience. Each component of the installation speaks to a different aspect of how stories can unfold, reimagining the very essence of narrative that lingers in the spaces between action, reflection, and observation.

The first part of the installation presents a real-time recording of the shadows cast by leaves onto a sheet of paper in an enclosed room. The shadows, moving with the shifting light from the outside world, emphasize the passage of time in its simplest form. Through the movement of the shadows, the piece focuses attention on subtle changes in perception as time unfolds.

In the second video, Betül shifts focus to the concept of process. The footage alternates between a fast-forwarded sunset reflection on the wall and a real-time recording of the artist adjusting a curtain and moving behind the camera. This contrast between the accelerated sunset and the patient, deliberate actions of the artist underscores the varying ways in which time is experienced. Through these contrasting flows of time, Betül highlights the power of small, deliberate actions and the moments of stillness that exist between larger, more dramatic shifts. Here, process becomes a language of its own, a quiet pulse that resonates beneath the surface of the everyday.

The final component of the installation presents a physical arrangement of three pieces of paper hanging in the exhibition space. One paper subtly reflects the movement within the room, drawing a connection between the viewer’s presence and the shifting narrative of the installation. The other two pieces of paper mark electric sockets, the quiet infrastructure that powers the videos, subtly calling attention to the unseen yet essential mechanisms that bring the artwork to life. In this arrangement, Betül invites the viewer to consider the narrative as something that exists not only in the visible actions but also in the quiet, often overlooked, elements of everyday life.
