Cardboard boxes, various tapes, birch plywood, castor wheels

This work explores the experience of constant relocation and the shifting nature of belonging. Centered on the Turkish locative suffix “de / da,” meaning in or at, the work explores how language and memory move with place. Each box represents a home the artist has lived in, across Turkey, Belgium, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Twenty cardboard boxes of different sizes are taped with materials that behave differently, some reflective, some resistant, some fragile. They rest on a moving platform, suggesting the ongoing cycles of packing, unmaking, and adapting that accompany relocation. Whenever the work is re-exhibited, it is reproduced with locally sourced materials, and the number of boxes is updated according to the artist’s relocations to date. For the 15th Biennale of Young Artists, the work is reproduced in Skopje using locally sourced cardboard boxes and tapes. This process of reassembly continues the work’s investigation into movement and adaptation, exploring how materials, like memories, change with each context of arrival.
