Betül Aksunot written in stone
2024
Site-specific installation
Clay, 196x20 cm

In this installation, Betül Aksu interacts with the existing traces in the exhibition space of AVTO by incorporating them into her work. Using clay from her hometown of Izmir, she inscribes the phrase not written in stone on the wall. This phrase reflects on the impermanence of history and its constant rewriting in the present. As the clay naturally fades over the course of the exhibition, it underscores the transient nature of both the space and the words. The work encourages reflection on how histories are shaped, erased, and reimagined, while also inviting interaction with the past and future of the space.

As part of the Permessus series, this work expands on Betül Aksu’s exploration of how the past and its boundaries are constructed and reimagined.
