Sound installation

yürüme is a sound installation that reflects on the experience of navigating the world through shifting languages. Inspired by Oruç Aruoba’s philosophy book of the same name, the work follows a three-part journey, yer (place), yön (direction), yol (way), through sound. Each section is experienced through a separate headphone, guiding the listener through stages of self-discovery, migration, and linguistic negotiation.

Instead of a human protagonist, the installation imagines language itself as the subject. What does it mean for a language to grow up, to navigate its own surroundings, to become foreign to itself? These questions are reflected in layered soundscapes that blend clarity and confusion, familiarity and estrangement. A framed screenshot of the sound editing software accompanies the headphones, positioning the audio not just as experience, but as visual trace. yürüme invites the listener to consider how language listens back, carries memory, and is shaped by the places it passes through.
